I consider Joe to be the brother I never had. He was the most passionate, unbelievably loyal man I've ever met. Guys like him don't come around very often.
— Erik Vendt, college best friend and two-time Olympic silver medalist
Curreri was a former captain of the USC swim team and a scholastic All-American in high school. He drowned in an off-duty accident in the Philippines while serving as a Green Beret.

3 memories of Joseph
from the the hearts of our family, we are so sorry for his lost. its an honor for us to have your hero serve our country
Your son lays to rest next to my husband SSG Darrell R. Griffin Jr....I keep the stone you left me with the word "blessings" on my desk by Darrell's picture, everyday I look at it and I am reminded of your son, and the bond we share, the silent communacation of two families ...I hope to one day meet you. Sincerely, Diana Griffin
It is hard to think that in Twenty days Joe will be gone two years! I remember on this day two years ago thinking we are almost there, our guys will be home in less than a month! At that time they were all safe and us wives had much to look forward to. There will never be words to speak our fear or honor as SF Wives all we ask is that all remember the men we stood next to and that it takes great courage to be and support a service member. We will never forget Joe and continue to keep the entire Curreri Family in our daily thoughts .
