He didn't want to talk about it. He would always say, 'It's something that can tear your heart apart' -- the situations they were put in and the things they saw. He kept us sheltered from all of that.
    — Natalia Heredia, widow

Heredia worked two jobs, setting up banquet tables at the Santa Maria Inn and stocking shelves at a local grocery store, after high school graduation. Shortly before his wedding, he enlisted.

Five memories of Joseph J. Heredia

What I remember most about Joseph was when Natalie and him would smile and joke around in the hallways of Santa Maria High. Back then I didn't think twice about it. But, in retrospect, I realize now, that it was one of the most classic depictions of love I've ever witnessed.

SMHS (especially Class of 2000) is better having known Joseph, and we'll never forget him.

I remember when I first met Joe, he was very quiet, but as years passed I got to know him for the sweet person he was because when he knew someone was down he always tried to make them laugh or just gave them a hug and said things will get better. Like, when I went through my hardest break up with my first love he came up to me and hugged me and whispered in my ear and said, "You can do way better you're a beautiful person and without you he's nothing." The day I got the phone call and heard about his death it broke my heart and I just cried all night because it was hard to believe. Till this day when I look at his picture it's still hard to believe he's gone, but he was always about honor and I know he died serving his country and not one person isn't proud of who he became … may he rest in peace. Joe I love you buddy … you'll never be forgotten!

Joe Heredia was the most admirable Marine I have ever known. Of course it was a platoon function, but Joe really loved and cared about the Marine Corps. Many fallen heroes of 3rd Bn, 5th Mar will never be forgotten. His character established confidence, courage, and most important, a true leader that will never let his members of his platoon down. Day in and day out, Corporal Heredia is deeply missed from those that ever met him. We miss you brother, so does Jay Jay, Wild-Man, Gonzo, and J-Cranks. Never would we forget Phantom Fury, and those that gave it their all for the liberties we are enjoying in present time. Joe set the example of being a true leader, we were his flock and he was our sheppard.
