A lot of kids have the perception that the Iraqi people are a bunch of bad people. He really told the kids that there are more good people there than bad, and that it was really his honor and privilege to support those good people.
— Rob Scheidt, uncle, on nephew's visit to elementary school classes.
His mother said Pickard's outlook on life changed when he went on a mission trip during his senior year in high school, helping to build homes for the poor in Mexico. He followed his older brother, a Marine who served two tours in Iraq, into the military.

2 memories of Joshua
I served in Iraq with Josh in his platoon. He was a great, fun loving guy with a sense of pride in his country. I am proud to say I served with a man of his caliber, and will greatly miss the times we had together.
Lance Corporal Jason A. Thomas
USMC
I went to boot camp with Josh. Was a great man and more so an outstanding Marine. Semper Fi.
