Soto was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Iraq. Although the military listed his hometown as San Angelo, Texas, family members said he was born in Bakersfield and graduated from high school in Avenal. His older brother Shane, who serves in the Air Force, accompanied Soto's body back from Iraq, according to the Bakersfield Californian.
