Before we heard about Karina, the reports from Iraq were all numbers and names with no faces. Now one of the names has a face from here in our very own Livingston.
— Gurpal Samra, mayor of Livingston
Lau's father, Augustin, is ethnically Chinese, and her mother is Mexican. Both parents were born in Mexico. Her fourth-grade teacher said she came into the class speaking mostly Spanish but by year's end was registering the highest scores on English tests.

I'll never forget the day your face- this picture- appeared on the TV. After training in Georgia, I got to come home to California; you went off to fight this war. I have served since in rememberance of, and with respect for, you.
