Before we heard about Karina, the reports from Iraq were all numbers and names with no faces. Now one of the names has a face from here in our very own Livingston.
— Gurpal Samra, mayor of Livingston
Lau's father, Augustin, is ethnically Chinese, and her mother is Mexican. Both parents were born in Mexico. Her fourth-grade teacher said she came into the class speaking mostly Spanish but by year's end was registering the highest scores on English tests.

So young, yet old enough to have given the greatest gift of all. Freedom, not only for those across the sea, but us too back here at home. Thank you sooo much and know my prayers will always be with your family and you Karina.

I'll never forget the day your face- this picture- appeared on the TV. After training in Georgia, I got to come home to California; you went off to fight this war. I have served since in rememberance of, and with respect for, you.
