He just wanted to be a soldier. I never said, 'Don't do this.' Because that was his wish, that was his dream.

Gutierrez-Rosales was a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Tepic, Mexico. He came to the U.S. with his mother as a teenager.

    12 memories of Luis E. Gutierrez-Rosales

Gutierrez was my drill sargent when I went through Basic, at fort Jackson. He had the best heart of any person i have ever met in the military. He would sit in a chair in the barracks after marches and all of us who were hurt would line up, he would fix blisters bandage cuts, and take the time to talk to each person one on one. He made every single person feel special and important. He was also the most playful person, on march's he would sneak off into the woods and then jump out and suprise people. He was always happy, always smiling, always singing. He would whip out pictures of his his "little princess" amber. He would talk about her everyday, he was so proud to be a father. I respect him more than any other person I have met. He loved what he did, and was always excited about his job. I have some pictures of him from basic, if the family is interested, fathappychap@yahoo.com.

Luis was my Godfather and my best friend. He called me his Heatherina. When he was in SC he took me up to Hilton Field and taught me how to drive his car because I did not know how to drive a stick shift. One day I mentioned a boy's name and he growled, took me outside and taught me how to handle a knife. He said I should know how to take care of myself at all times. I miss him so much--there was so much he still wanted to teach me and I wanted to learn. I miss you Luis!

QUIKI!! ERA UN BUEN HERMANO, AMIGO, FUE UN GRAN HOMBRE, COMO POCOS EN EL MUNDO. EL TODO EL TIEMPO TENIA ALGO PARA HACERTE REIR, EL TODO EL TIEMPO TENIA UN BUEN CONCEJO PARA LAS PERSONAS QUE NECESITABAN DE SU AYUDA. APESAR DE YO SER SU HERMANA MAYOR, EL SIEMPRE TENIA UN COMENTARIO BUENO. CUANDO ERAS NINOS ME ACUERDO QUE SIEMPRE JUGABAMOS A LOS SOLDADITOS Y EL SIEMPRE ME DECIA QUE QUERIA SER UN BUEN SOLDADO. EL TRATO DE ENTRAR EN EL EJERCITO EN MEXICO PERO NO LO ACEPTARON POR SER DEMASIADO DELGADO, PERO CUANDO EL LLEGO A ESTADOS UNIDOS Y ENTRO A LA HIGH SCHOOL. EL SOLO SE INFORMO Y ARREGLO TODO PARA ENTRAR AL ARMY. YO ME SIENTO MUY ORGULLOSA DE EL, POR QUE EL FUE MI HERMANITO, MI APOYO TANTO MORAL, COMO ESPIRITUAL. SI TU LO HUBIERAS CONOCIDO EN VIDA, NUNCA TE HUBIERAS ARREPENTIDO DE SER SU AMIGO. COMO YO NUNCA ME ARREPIENTO DE HABER SIDO SU HERMANA Y AMIGA." NUNCA TE VOY OLVIDAR MANITO".

On this day, 2 June 2009, almost two years later I had to find out that I lost my battle buddy downrange. DS Gutierrez and I were drill sergeants together in Fort Jackson 2000-2002, what a great spirit, a beautiful soul, and warm person who did nothing but spread happiness all around, he cared from the bottom of his heart. I remember one thing most if I didn't remember anything else was the love he had for his precious daughter, he talked about her day in and day out. We shared that in common because I have a daughter, so ever second we got it was about our girls. I thought of his daughter instantly today when I heard the news. My heart goes out to her. God bless you my child. His sister quoted "God doesn't want the good looking guys in heaven" I couldn't help but laugh because that is something he would say. He always came up with some off the wall stuff...lol The Soldiers laughed when he called cadence because his accent was so thick. I want to take this moment and thank my battle because he was there for me during a very rough period in my life and I truly love my brother in Christ for his caring and loving spirit and kind words of wisdom he bestowed upon me. What an angel God has added to his list. I am sure my battle is looking down and smiling that beautiful smile that he often glistened upon his face day in and down out regardless of how gloomy the some days seemed sometimes. He trained hard, he produced the best Soldiers in the U.S Army, he taught me a thing or two on how to train and fight as an Infantryman, he did what he love to do and that was to protect and serve with honor, duty, respect and selfless service!!

I have great memories of SFC Gutierrez. I served with him when he was in HHC 2nd BDE, 1st ID. He would always show up with his trademark smile and joke about what the PT uniform of the day would be. He was a wonderful NCO and a great mentor. I can't remember anyone who didn't look up to him. The day still haunts me back in 2007 when I opened up the "Army Times" and saw his picture... simply devastating.

SFC Gutierrez was my first friend in the infantry I served with him from my very first day. He always took care of me and chilled with me he was a amazing man and the greatest leader I ever had the pleasure of knowing he will be missed dearly and I will never forget him he's always in my thoughts.

4 years ago today.... All my prayers go out to you and your family. It's just as hard as the day I found out. Today I wear my uniform with the upmost pride and respect, in your name.

SFC Gutierrez was a drill sergeant in Alpha Company, the company I belonged to at basic training back in 2002. I had different drill sergeants. He was a kind man who sincerely cared about the soldiers welfare, but still kept his military bearing as he trained the buckaroos! I am truly sorry for your loss. Take comfort in knowing that SFC Gutierrez touched many lives and his memory will always live on in our hearts. God Bless.

SFC Gutierrez and I served together at FOB Dagger in Iraq. He was always there to listen and to bring a smile when one was needed. I am sorry for the loss of him, but know that they needed a kind heart in Heaven.

On today I was just told by my battle J. Ortiz, that DS Gutierrez was killed. It saddings me to hear this. I really looked up to him and in so many ways wanted to be like him. He set the standards in the military, and lead by example. I still tell stories about how he trained us and the fun we had. It's hard to believe he's gone. He is truly missed.
