On 30 September 2006, Corporal Tejeda paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country, his unit and his brothers-in-arms.
    — Cpt. Tony L. Thornton, at the memorial service

Tejeda was killed when a roadside bomb hit the vehicle he was in, on his way to relieve soldiers at a checkpoint, according to Stars and Stripes. The newspaper reported that "the mission Tejeda was on gave Iraqi and American forces the opportunity to search for weapons, contraband and insurgents."

    Luis,

Thank you very much for your service to this country. This country is powerful and respected because of men and women like you. There is no ultimate sacrifice than a life. Only brave men and women like you can be called heroes. Knowing the possible outcome of serving in the military is courages and admirable on your part and it says a lot about you.

Not everyone is like you and not everyone can be you because very few people are like you, strong.

    Thank you.
