He always wanted to be a Marine serving his country and protecting those he loved.
    — Robert Barry, former roommate at the U.S. Naval Academy

Carazo, a Marine helicopter pilot, was killed the same day as Maj. James Weis, 37, of Toms River, New Jersey, who was also in his unit. Although military officials listed Carazo's hometown as Springfield, Ohio, he had lived for a decade in Carlsbad. Carazo was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer in 1991, attended flight training in Pensacola, Fla., and received his Wings of Gold in 1994. He was deployed seven times to Asia and the Mideast, including stints in Iraq in 2006 and 2008.

One memory of Mario D. Carazo

LtCol Carazo was the first pilot to give me a front seat ride on a cobra. He will be missed, gunfighters rule!!!!
