She could not simply enter a room. She bounced and bounded in, ready to meet anyone and anything with an optimistic tenacity that intimidated some, but inspired many.
— Fellow officer, quoted in "A Soldier's Dream" by William Doyle
McClung was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near her Humvee in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. The public affairs officer, who was escorting reporters in a convoy, was the first female Marine officer to be killed in the war. McClung was born in Hawaii, but grew up in Orange County, Calif. where she attended high school.

Three memories of Megan M. McClung
God bless you and your scarifice for our beliefs. May you always be remembered, We will stand strong for you!!
Thanks for your service. You look and sound to be a beautiful person gone too soon. RIP
My heart hurt when I saw your picture.
I spent 9 years in the military. I know what a hard time you had coming through the ranks.
In the face of adversity you decided to stay knowing what the price could be.
And you willingly paid it.
I know there's sunshine, cool gentle rain, bright vibrant flowers and warm supporting loving people where you are now.
I hope I'm good enough to follow your footsteps and make it there.
Take Care.
