I have seen what combat can do. But even though I encouraged my sons to do what they wanted to do, I had an immense fear of what would happen to Michael. And that came true.
    — Jim Balsley, father, a Vietnam veteran

When his father asked him why he became an Army cavalry scout, a tough assignment on the front lines of combat, Balsley said: "I guess I want my own war stories, Dad."

Hey kid ! I talked to Nick this morning and he asked about where you are in Porterville. He's going to make sure that you get flowers all the time now. And check this ! He's going to come here to visit this summer. Very cool. Can't wait to see him. I've sort of adopted a Marine who was killed about a year and half ago. I'm a bit far from you, kid. So, I guess that I connected with him Memorial Day. I met his parents and asked if I could visit with him and have flowers for him.
Damn, I miss you. I have the photo of you next to your Humvee on the wall in my office. I also have your saber now and it'll be hanging next to you. You know that I'm failing some what these days and I'm never giving up.
It's still me and you, punk.

Know Michael, and his family very well. I live just down the street from them. He
was an outstanding young man, followed in his fathers footsteps. He is missed by me, I think of him everyday, his picture hangs on my front door for all to see, and respect.
