We spend a lot of time telling students there's no glory in war, that it's ugly, a thing to be avoided. But if someone wants to serve their country, we will do everything we can to help them.
    — George Anderson, ROTC instructor in Bakersfield Californian

The Department of Defense reported that Spencer died in a non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq. The incident is under investigation. His widow, Athena Spencer, told the Bakersfield Californian that she had been given very little information about her husband's death. "They've told us probably as much as they've told you," she told the newspaper. "It was on base, so it wasn't combat."

Ray, I'll always remember you. I'll always remember the good times in High School, talking to each other to no end about becoming Marines. Watching you go to boot camp before me, watching you come back, walking tall, finally a US Marine.

Semper Fi, and Fraetr Pro Vita, Ray.

Spencer was the most honest and optimistic person I ever met, he never had problems with any one and every one loved his character. Always a proud marine even before he was actually in the marines. My best friend joined the marines only because he wanted to follow in Ray's foot steps. He was an amazing person.

Spencer, we all miss you and even though its been a year since youve passed. We have not forgotten, i hope somehow you can read this.. Many of us gathered together on your day and paid tributes to you. We all miss you brother, especially me.

Ray was a Marine to look up to. He always had a smile on his face and nothing seemed to ever bother him. I was in the same squad and sometimes same team as him. I got to know him very well and was on my way to meeting his wife. I will always remember our memories together Ray. I miss him everyday and wish he was still with us.. Athena i wish good fortune for you and your life, just please always remember your loving husband as he was.
