I know you think I see this as just a big adventure and a carefree event for me. I admit I was willing to go. After all, this is what I have trained for, for the past 18 years.... If I did not go, someone else would have to.
    — Raymond D. Hill, in a letter to his wife

Hill joined the National Guard in 1987, two years after graduating high school. He married, earned a bachelor's degree from Cal State Stanislaus and went to work as an engineer technician with the Modesto Irrigation District. But he never left the Guard.

Seven memories of Raymond D. Hill II

Ray Hill deployed twice to the middle east, once after 9/11 protecting the borders of Kuwait, then again to Iraq in 2005. His focus during the Iraq despite his assigned duties was the well being of his fellow soldiers. He is and will continue to be missed.

Ray served under me twice. I could not ask for a more rock-solid, reliable, stalwart comrade.

Captain Hill is a hero. I thank him for his sacrifice. My prayers are with his family.

I was then LT Ray Hill's platoon medic when we deployed to Kuwait right after 911. Nobody knew what might happen in those early days. Ray was a big, enthusiastic, caring man. Besides being his medic, I was often his co-driver and bodyguard when we were on the road or out in the sand, which would often seem like being on an interesting field trip. Ray was very proud of learning and teaching Arabic numerals, characters, and phrases. Together, we went and watched an Arab shipbuilder building a beautiful vessel the traditional way. He was always seemed to have at least one or two extra projects going at any given time to improve our working area. We worked hard together, and enjoyed each other's company.
