Two Marines killed, several wounded. I was hesitant to write about this, however, it's the reality of this place. Everyone in the battalion is getting through this.
— Ricardo Crocker, in one of his e-mail dispatches to his Santa Monica Police Department colleagues
A life-size cutout photograph of Crocker in his combat gear stood in the Santa Monica Police Department's detective squad bureau. He had already come back from one tour in Iraq and they expected him to return safely again.

Rick was a man who truly appreciated life. He tried to see the sunset every evening... whenever possible. He loved to travel and talk with everyone he encountered. Rick taught me to appreciate all the blessings we have and to value our family and friends. He was super-intelligent and caring and a great listener. He was a very supportive friend.
God is lucky to have him in heaven but we all miss him.
I served with Major Crocker in Iraq in 2004. I was even there when he was promoted from Captain to Major in Al Qaim. He was a good leader and public speaker. He had a charisma that made you listen and follow. A few of his passions were baseball and rock music. The way he would talk about the subjects and his vast knowledge of the two made you want to study up on the subjects just so you could keep up with the conversation. His role in Iraq when i was there was vital and he really helped create a strong relationship between local iraqis and the military. He will be greatly missed.
