    Hopkins died at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 8, 2010, a day after his 30th reconstructive surgery and 15 months after a motor pool accident in Baghdad, Iraq. At the time of his death, he was assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.

    I did not know Ryan, but I am from Pleasanton and my mom grew up in Livermore. I am proud to be from the same area as such a distinguished hero. Rest in peace Ryan.

    I don't know this soldiers as I'm just visiting the LA Times website. I thank him and his family for his dedication to our county. Thank you for keeping America free and protecting our beliefs. It's because heroes like you my very young daughter will be able to live freely in this wonderful country. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! RIP
