My son-in-law was the type of person who would take his shoes and shirt off and give them to someone who needed them. If he saw someone broken down on the highway, he would turn around and help them.
— Maggie Prendiz, in the San Diego Union-Tribune
Bachar married his wife in a small backyard ceremony 12 days before he deployed, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The couple had been planning a larger celebration when he returned. Bachar spoke English, Spanish and Arabic.

1 memory of Salem

At his memorial service in Fallujah, not long after he was killed, I was struck at how deeply his death was felt. We honor all the dead, we miss them all. But in the words of one Officer, he was special, he was truly a good kid, 'he was one of the good ones', his death had severe impact on us all; even after three years of war. I knew him only from a distance, and it was obvious that he was well loved and respected by this fellow Marines. It was an honor to serve with him.
