Because Astra is the female version of Astro, George and Jane Jetson's dog. Also, because my husband (not George!) is an astronomer.
I gotta say, it worries me when people name their animals as a food (i.e. Cupcake, Chilidog, Pudding, Taffy, etc. etc.)
We got her when she was only 3 months. We were driving by a "Molly Maid" shop and decided that was the perfect name for her, Molly!

MY SON WAS A BASEBALL PITCHER WITH TRIPLE A AND THE ANGELS FOR AWHILE. NOW HE IS COACHING IN THE GIANTS ORG. HIS OUT PITCH WAS A SLIDER SO WHEN HE BROUGHT HOME THIS 6 WEEK OLD PUPPY WHICH HE THOUGHT WAS A FULL LAB WE NAMED HIM SLIDER. HE TURNED OUT TO BE HALF LAB HALF PIT BULL. I HAVE HAD 12 DOGS IN MY 59 YEARS AND THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST BEST DOG GOD PUT ON THIS EARTH.
i named my quail ridge chesapeake bay retriever "hooper" highwater for the hooper island high tide water lighthouse on the chesapeake bay.
It only seemed fitting to name our newest dog ... a golden lab ... Fenway. One of our dogs is named Kirby after Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett. The other dog is named Bagwell after Houston Astros legend Jeff Bagwell. I figured we had two dogs named after ballplayers so it about time for a ballpark. I also have a friend that named his golden lab Wrigley after the Cubs ballpark and I promised I would named the next dog Fenway so we would have the two best ballparks covered. Sorry ... Dodgers Stadium just didn't work ... but I love the place.
Hey Carl, thanks for the input.
I don't think we switched any numbers around, but one of the big challenges of pulling the database together was cleaning up the data provided by the government.
The information that's available is limited to whatever is written on the registration form, and there aren't many controls on what people can write in there. Considering that, you can guess how many variations on the spelling of dachshund or Labrador retriever turn up.
A decision I made when preparing the data was to consolidate all of the records listed simply as "schnauzers" under the standard label, and only those that included some indication of "miniature" as the smaller variety. That's a debatable decision, and perhaps ultimately a mistake. Do you think it would improve things if I lumped both groups together under the a broader generic label. Maybe just "schnauzer" for both?
