Arranger | Bandleader | Composer | Jazz Musician
Born Bennett Lester Carter on Aug. 8, 1907 in Harlem, NY
Died July 12, 2003 of complications from multiple illnesses in Los Angeles, CA

Benny Carter's versatility as a first-rate saxophonist, composer-arranger and bandleader made him a leading figure in jazz for more than eight decades.

Although he never attained the broad public recognition of contemporaries such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, he was among the most influential players and leaders in the history of the music. Indeed, among jazz professionals and knowledgeable fans, nobody had a better reputation.

Although considered by fellow musicians as one of the most sophisticated and knowledgeable of players, Carter had little formal musical education and was largely self-taught.
