Screen star Carlyle Blackwell began his career when he was 19 years old in New York. There he played small parts at first, afterward rising to the place of leading man.

After a varied experience on the stage, he went into pictures. He was one of the first of the wavy-pompadoured screen heroes to cause flutterings in debutante hearts of the pre-World War I period motion pictures.

He built the Kalem studio in Hollywood, which later became the Charles Ray studio.
