Charles Bickford's career as an actor spanned 53 years and included the Broadway stage, motion pictures and television.
He came to Hollywood when Cecil B. DeMille saw him on Broadway and offered him the leading role in the film "Dynamite." Other films that followed in quick succession for the big redhead included "Anna Christie," River's End" and "Little Miss Marker."
Although nominated three times, Bickford never won an Oscar.
