A mercurial director, Fritz Lang's motion pictures set a world standard in suspense and visual composition for nearly four decades.
His dedicated perfectionism was responsible for such classics as "Metropolis," "M," "Liliom," "Fury," "Man Hunt," "Woman in the Window" and "Clash by Night."
An autocrat on the set, Lang's toughness drew frequent complaints from his actors. But he directed the top stars of the era, including Edward G. Robinson, Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Ryan and Marilyn Monroe.
