Movie producer and distributor Jack Harris was best known for his 1958 cult horror favorite “The Blob,” which The Times once dubbed “malevolent silicone goop.” Steve McQueen got his first starring role in Harris’ film, which the producer made for about $140,000. “The Blob” spawned the 1972 sequel “Beware! The Blob,” which Harris co-wrote. There was also a 1988 remake co-written by Frank Darabont, who went on to create AMC's “The Walking Dead."
After finding success with the original 1958 film, Harris went on to produce such horror and science fiction pictures as “4D Man,” “Equinox” and “Eyes of Laura Mars.” Harris, who began his entertainment career as a vaudeville performer, had several uncredited acting roles, including an appearance in “Beware! The Blob.”
He is the father of Lynda Resnick, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Pom Wonderful and Fiji Water.
Harris died Mar. 14, 2017 at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 98.
