James Doohan
A veteran actor from Canada, the late James Doohan is inextricably linked with a can-do engineer and his Scottish brogue: Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.
On the “Star Trek” television series and movies, whenever all seemed lost on the starship Enterprise, Scotty would come through with a brilliant feat of engineering to save the day. And as the frequent operator of the ship’s transporter device, he would also get his own catchphrase — “Beam me up, Scotty” — although those exact words were never uttered precisely that way on the show itself.
“Jimmy was Scotty,” George Takei, who played navigator Sulu on “Star Trek,” told The Times in 2005. “He’s really Irish Canadian, but he’s world-renowned as a Scotsman. His claim was he imbibed enough of Scotland libations to be Scottish.”
At Doohan’s request, a portion of his ashes were to be sent into space in orbit around the Earth, but a 2008 attempt to do so ended unceremoniously — and very un-Scotty-like — when the rocket carrying them failed.
