Actor
Born Javier Angel Encinas Bardem on March 1, 1969 in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain

Since he came to international fame playing the poet Reinaldo Arenas in 2000’s “Before Night Falls,” Javier Bardem has enthralled audiences with his charm, skill and, of course, hair.

Though he learned English as an adult, the Spanish-born actor has played the heartthrob in movies like “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (where he seduces the likes of Scarlett Johansson and his real-life spouse Penelope Cruz) and “Eat Pray Love” (where he romances Julia Roberts). He also earned acclaim for playing hard-luck sympathetic types in dramas such as “The Sea Inside” and “Biutiful”; both roles earned him Oscar nominations.

But it was as Anton Chigurh, a deranged serial killer with a memorable mop in 2007’s “No Country for Old Men,” that Bardem established himself as one of his generation’s most talented actors. (“Call it, Friendo.”) Bardem won an Oscar for the role and would go on to play an equally creepy bad guy in the 2012 James Bond movie “Skyfall,” in which he served as a ferocious and flamboyant counterpoint to Daniel Craig’s coolly reserved Bond.

In an October 2012 interview with The Times, Bardem described his on-camera approach. “It’s very difficult to perform without any expectation of how it’s going to be perceived,” he said. “But that’s the goal for me — to go to a place where you don’t care.”
