J.M. Kerrigan was an Irish character actor who crossed over to success in the United States. He appeared in many stage productions and some films in Ireland before coming to the U.S. in 1917.
“I started out at the Abbey Theater in Dublin," Kerrigan told the Times in 1930. "We were paid $1 a week. We were supported by our families, so it didn’t matter. I don’t think any of us was over 21, and we were terribly enthusiastic.”
His film credits included "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "My Cousin Rachel" and "The Wolf Man."
Among other things, Kerrigan was a newspaper reporter before turning to acting, and he told The Times he regretted forsaking journalism, which he regarded as a glamorous career.
