Martin Scorsese
Few would deny that, after more than 40 years at the helm, Martin Scorsese remains one of the industry’s finest and most influential film directors.
A childhood movie buff and New York University Film School graduate, Scorsese exploded onto the Hollywood consciousness with 1973’s kinetic “Mean Streets,” his third feature and the first of nine collaborations with actor Robert De Niro.
Though the Italian American filmmaker is perhaps most identified with his seminal, unflinching character studies (“Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull”) and often violent crime dramas (“Good Fellas,” “Casino,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Departed”), he has continually defied pigeonholing by directing his own unique brand of comedy (“The King of Comedy,” “After Hours”), religious epic (“The Last Temptation of Christ,” “Kundun”), biopic (“The Aviator”), romantic drama (“Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”) and even musicals (“New York, New York” and such concert films as “The Last Waltz” and “Shine a Light”).
Other feature credits include “The Color of Money,” “Cape Fear,” “The Age of Innocence,” “Bringing Out the Dead” and the thriller “Shutter Island,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio in his fourth big-screen outing with the director.
The intense, voluble Scorsese, who has also been heavily involved in film preservation, has produced or executive produced many features, written or co-written a number of screenplays and occasionally pops up in front of the camera as well.
The eight-time Oscar nominee finally won the best director award in 2006 for “The Departed.” That film, a remake of the Hong Kong police drama “Infernal Affairs,” also won him Directors Guild and Golden Globe awards.
Scorsese has been nominated for a total of eight Golden Globes (including another win for “Gangs of New York”) and won the Globes’ 2010 honorary Cecil B. DeMille award. The director has been nominated for seven Directors Guild awards and, in 2003, was given that group’s Lifetime Achievement award.
Scorsese has been married five times and has three daughters.
