As a young man Percy Faith was forced to abandon his pursuit of a concert pianist's career only to later become a world famous popular music composer, conductor and arranger.

Born in Toronto, Faith began as an arranger-conductor for Canadian radio in the early 1930s, moving to the U.S. in 1940 to become prominent on radio shows here.

In 1950, he joined Columbia Records as musical director of the popular division and has more than 45 of his albums in that company's catalog.

His arrangements of "Because of You," "Cold, Cold Heart" and "From Rags to Riches" helped singer Tony Bennett win three gold records.

His own composition, "My Heart Cries for You," won a gold record while launching the singing career of Guy Mitchell.

His first film scoring effort, "Love Me or Leave Me" in 1955, brought him an Academy Award nomination.
