Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe has received almost as much attention for off-screen incidents as he has for his performances, three of which earned him Academy Award nominations.
Crowe appeared in several films in Australia and the U.S. before his breakthrough role as tough-guy detective Wendell “Bud” White in the Oscar-nominated film adaptation of “L.A. Confidential.”
That film began a remarkable string of box office and critical hits for Crowe, including “The Insider,” “Gladiator” and “A Beautiful Mind.” Crowe received best actor Oscar nominations for all three films and won for “Gladiator.”
Off screen, the actor has had a reputation as a hot head, with incidents surfacing in the press. The most high-profile incident occurred in 2005, when the actor was arrested by the NYPD and charged with second-degree assault. He later pleaded guilty to throwing a phone at an employee of the Mercer Hotel in New York City.
In addition to his acting, Crowe has toured extensively with a series of rock bands he’s been part of since his teenage years. He’s also a part owner of the rugby team the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Crowe married Australian actress and singer Danielle Spencer in 2003. They have two sons.
