Taylor Holmes was a stage, screen and TV actor who was a noted matinee idol of the early 1900s.

Born in Newark, N.J., he first appeared professionally in vaudeville at Keith's Theater in Boston and in London music halls. He played with E.H. Sothern in "Hamlet" in 1901 in New York's Garden Theater.

Some of his biggest stage hits were "Master a la Carte," "The Third Party," "The Great Necker," "The Sap," "Big-Hearted Herbert," "Tobacco Road," and "I'd Rather Be Right."

His many movies included "The Return of Sherlock Holmes," "Only the Brave," "An American Tragedy," "Dinner at Eight," "Nana," "Great Expectations" and "The Dominant Sex."
