Variety has been Hollywood's leading trade publication for decades, known for its colorful headlines and sometimes criticized for its soft take on the entertainment industry.

The publication was founded in New York in 1905 by Sime Silverman, who opened offices in Hollywood in 1933.

Over the years, Variety adopted dozens of idiosyncratic slag phrases — "ankel," "B.O.," "topliner" — as well as bizarre headlines ("STICKS NIX HICK PIX" and "WALL STREET LAYS AN EGG.")

For years, the paper was edited by Peter Bart, a well-known Hollywood insider who recently stepped down. Variety has struggled in recent years with the decline of print publications and rise of online Hollywood publications.
