Wesley Ruggles was one of Hollywood's leading movie directors in the 1930s and '40s.

The noted filmmaker started in motion pictures in 1914 as a Keystone Cop in Mack Sennett's comedies.

Ruggles earned an Oscar nomination for best director for the film "Cimarron." He also directed such movies as "Valiant Is the Word for Carrie," "Sing, You Sinners," "Too Many Husbands," "Arizona" and "See Here, Private Hargrove."

At the time of his death, Ruggles had been retired for two decades.
