Known for crowd-pleasing dunks and temperamental demeanor, Bates played the last 27 minutes of his NBA career with the Lakers toward the end of the 1982-83 season. After his release by the Lakers 10 days after they signed him, Bates went on to become a star in the Philippine Basketball Assn.
In 2000, Bates was convicted of first-degree aggravated assault and second-degree assault after he robbed a gas station in New Jersey. He was incarcerated for seven years and was released in March 2008.
