Dick Garrett was a first-team, all-rookie selection in 1969-70 and a starter on a Lakers team that lost in the NBA Finals to the New York Knicks in seven games. He led the Lakers in free-throw percentage (.852) that season and averaved 11.6 points per game.
But the Lakers left the 6-foot-3 guard unprotected in the expansion draft the next off-season and he was claimed by the Buffalo Braves. He played four more seasons in the NBA.
Garrett’s son, Diante, is a junior starting guard at Iowa State.
