A member of the gold-medal winning 1976 U.S. Olympic basketball team, Carr was selected sixth overall by the Lakers in the 1976 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-7 forward played off the bench in 129 games with the Lakers, averaging 6.8 points per game.
An All-American at North Carolina State, Carr was traded to Cleveland in 1979 for a pair of future second-round draft picks (Wayne Robinson, Gene Banks). He went on to play nine more seasons in the league, recording a career total of 4,999 rebounds in 674 games before retiring in 1987.
