Douglas and I met freshman year in high school, where we became incredibly close. He wasn’t just a friend, he was a brother in every sense of the word, and I loved him dearly. He was very protective and was there for me during some difficult times. He was a wonderful, caring person. He had so much love for his family and friends, so much love and respect for this country. We kept in touch via e-mail and the occasional phone call whenever he was away. We had just spoken a week before we lost him. He was so excited about coming home and being with his beautiful family. I was so happy for him and so proud of him, and I could not wait to see him again. I miss my dear friend, my brother. Thank you for all the rides home, for all the laughs, for looking after me when my heart was broken, for being a true friend throughout the years. You are forever in my heart ♥️

Reading all of the kind words from people who were touched by Doug during his life literally put me into tears and I can't express how much it means to our family that people are keeping his memory alive. He was a true saint, hero, role model, mentor and true American who would take his shirt off for anyone in need. I would love to see a book or documentary on Doug and the people he touched throughout his life. His death was a loss for us all and he will never be forgotten.....I think about him every day. When i found out I was quite saddened. Doug was a great man, a great coach, and a great friend, dedicated 100 percent to the needs of his athletes and his students, he instinctively knew the right words to motivate you, and he was a man of his word. He was also the inventor of the stay puff marshmallow man award. Given to the best improved player of The year, awesome! He was the best Damn mentor a kid could ask for. God bless you bother, thank you for your service and stepping up. You " impress me".

I knew Coach Doug (before he started teaching) at LPHS from 1989-1993. It's no surprise that he would give his life so valiantly. Looking back I could see that he was destined to live as a true hero. He still lives on in my memories, and I am honored to say that I knew him. May God bless you and your family, Coach Doug.

Dougy Doug was a great friend and a true warrior. I had the great pleasure of serving with him in Colorado and his memory is alive and well. To "La Bouff" in which I would call him as I was in high school. La Bouff and I had a very unique friendship, but was very blessed to have him as my English teacher, coach, and mentor. He truly cared about all his students and supporting our girls basketball team as well. Although I did not have the chance to attend our Hero's services, I would like to take this time in thanking Mr. La Bouff for believing in what he did and carrying himself with such great integrity. You are truly missed and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for fighting for our freedom... You also were always there for me and I could never forget that. You will forever be in our hearts and thoughts. And all my love to your family, we are all proud of you Major <3

Wow Im in total shock to see he has passed away. He was my sub teacher in high school back in 95. He was such a great person.

Wow, I can't believe Doug died. I knew him growing up in La Puente and he was always a great kid and did bump into him a few times when we were older. I have to say he is the only person I personally knew to have this happen to. I'm shocked but definitely grateful to him and all our armed forces who are in harm's way to protect our freedooms we hold so dear to us. God rest his soul and may his family find sources of comfort in his passing as a real American hero.

I don't know this soldiers as I'm just visiting the website. I thank him and his family for his dedication to our county. Thank you for keeping America free and protecting our beliefs. I didn't know Doug personally but I did have telephone conversations with him. I enjoyed talking with him. Especially talking about his mother and also his nephew. You are missed...
