What I do remember is you being very out going and just fun being around, especially with Niguel and the guys during our valet operation on concert nights. I wish you could be here and make everyone missing you laugh again. R.I.P. soldier! He put his all into everything and the world will miss a great man! I miss your phone calls looking for my son and dialed my number by mistake. You could always make me smile and still do thinking of you today. The last memory I had of you was before you left on mission, you silly stringed all my gear and bunk before you left. Little did you know I had gotten you back but little did I know you would not return to see the surprise that was awaiting you! I remember we kept your bunk the way you left it or a good amount of time after you left us. We miss you brother and you remain in our hearts forever. Thu, 31 May 2012 05:35:05 -0700 Daniel Ee on May 28, 2012 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/nicholas-p-steinbacher/#c76413 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/nicholas-p-steinbacher/#c76413 I first met Nick at the Glendale/Eagle Rock Army Recruiting Station. We both had the same recruiter that took us running a few times a week. We became friends and trained together. We shipped off to basic training on the same day Dec 27 2004. Nick went off to Fort Benning GA to be a Special Forces soldiers and I went to Fort Knox Ky. Somehow I got a letter from Nick during my basic training. He was pumped up and ready for anything, he also told me about the new soldiers that acted tough but when tough situations occurred they would rank out which he found amusing. While at mt first duty station, Fort Hood Texas, I received a phone call from Nick asking me to pick him up from the Killeen Airport. He tolded me he broke his leg on a jump because he landed on a slope and hit it in a wrong angle. As Nick recovered he told me that we was determined to be a SF soldier so we trained together on running on the tank trails at Fort Hood TX. I remember during the time when he has doing his Expert Infantry Badge EIB qualifications, he was the best at every event. Nick was a very friendly and kind person. He was mentally tough and let nothing get to him, he always had a smile on his face. Nick is an America Hero, he served the people of the United States and made the ultimate sacrifice. On this day I remember Nick and soldiers alike. Thank you for service and today we all enjoy freedom and the American Way of Life. - SPC Daniel Ee 1-12 CAV (OIF 06-08) Mon, 28 May 2012 03:29:04 -0700 Daniel Serna on February 24, 2012 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/nicholas-p-steinbacher/#c70166 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/nicholas-p-steinbacher/#c70166 Not a whole lot of words can explain how distant a person I am to you But our service in army brings us close, our town and high school even closer. The sacrifice you and your family have made are recognized by me as the ultimate, God bless you and Nick and ill keep up the good fight down here. What I have in common with him is graduating from CV (1995) and going to war. Iraq and Afghanistan. I found this after reading that the US military has offically ceased operations in Iraq. I felt compeled to see how my old high school faired through ten years of war. I'm sorry for his loss but I know that no words of mine can ever ease the suffering that everyday brings in its own unique and pwerful way. It's not during the fight that you're scared, it's afterwards. When you have time to think. When I looked at pictures of my girls and thought to myself "How many more times is it going to turn out ok?" But I feel that Nick was much the same as any good Soldier. You're there to the job that you volunteered to do, were trained to do, paid to do and most of all, believed in. He was professional and a better man then many of his generation. For that, while I mourn his loss, I also commend his service. A Man among Men. a fellow Warrior. We never forget the loss of a loved one. I lost three brothers--and although not my kids--not a day goes by without thinking of them. My heart goes out to Paul and his family. In death we become immortal and live life forever as memories of good times. Nick's life and brave service will never be forgotten. Sat, 08 Oct 2011 09:13:45 -0700
