Still I knew who Wayne was and remember him in the same bright optimistic way mentioned above by Collin Clark. Positive, brought people together, made them smile if not laugh. It was a quiet night made dark and ugly when we lost him. I reoriented an entire company to search the area and ask information of the locals. They were terrified of the cell members who had done this. Although we deployed out of Baghdad to Diyala a few weeks later, it is small consolation but the information we started digging up led to the destruction of the insurgent cell. Thank you for your kind spirit and heroic service Wayne. See you again one day if they let me into Heaven -- no doubt in my mind it's where you are. Can you work up a good joke to St Peter so he'll let me slip in ? You are the best. He made everything feel so natural and genuine. He was the most selfless and caring person I've ever met. He could take such a horrible day, turn it around, and have you rolling on the ground laughing, literally... The day we lost him in that EFP, it took a deep part of me. I'm still angry to this day about it... My entire perspective of the war and the Iraqi people changed, I just couldn't believe anyone would want to take someone like Wayne... I remember about 3-4 months after Wayne had passed, we were transporting prisoners from a high risk raid we conducted. Andy and I were sitting up against a wall sharing a cigarette, waiting to load back up and head back into the fight. I passed the cigarette to him and said "I bet you a dollar if we had the chance to talk to our enemy for five minutes, before we start the shooting, we wouldn't kill each other." Andy said, "Hell, we'd might even like each other, but that kind thing don't exist in such an evil world anymore." He put the cigarette out and we loaded back up. I thought of Wayne when we rolled back out, I thought if that kind of thing existed, the five minute talk, Wayne could do it. He would have been the one to shake hands and make both sides laugh and co-exist... Sorry for the long rant, I still think of Wayne all the time. I love you bud, rest in peace. I helped him rehab a injury and got to know him very well. He was intense driven young man with dedication for excellence, a true hard charger. He had a passion for whatever he was doing. I miss him and am proud to have known him. Lone Pine is full of great people, and Wayne was a perfect example of that. Proud to call it my hometown. I remember we use to share and listen to music in class in high school. He were always funny and caring. I visit him everything I go back to LP. Thank you for your service.
