Tears still fall for my buddy. So so many memories come today. Arguments over history, loosing guns, cuffs and cars. When I came home from my deployment, he was one of very few to walk the grasses of the WLA VA grounds with me. I remember his conversion, I was his best man at his wedding at Camp Pendleton. When tragedy came to my child he stood watch at my front door for days. Not one day has gone by that Paul doesn't come to mind. I've been in contact with his family for a few years now. I am grateful to have has Paul as a friend. RIP soldier... Nuebauer was my battle buddy roommate and brbrother in arms. He would often talk of vallhala. As luck had it I had to drive for finch and wasn't in my typacle spot across from him in the a.p.c. that sept night . I loved that woody woodpecker laugh. I'll see you again someday . Spc. I was his supervisor on a few occasions, and he was in my Nat'l Guard unit. On his last night at work, he returned his team's vehicle, I was Charge of Quarters and logged it in. We talked for about an hour even though his shift was over. Paul was looking forward to his deployment, thinking that he could do some real good over there. I remember telling him to be careful, that this wasn't going to be like before when we went in, that the insurgents knew that they could not stand toe-to-toe with the US military. I felt it would be more like Vietnam, that they would disappear into the shadows and come out to fight a guerrilla war. Paul kept insisting that I was worrying too much and in the end I just offered my best wishes, hugged him, and told him to please take care. About a week after I returned from helping out in New Orleans after Katrina, my First Sergeant asked if I had Dress Blues, and I replied "Yes, why"? He told me what happened. I was the senior pall bearer at Paul's funeral. I wore dark glasses, they were prescription, to hide the tears as I had the Honor to carry him to his final rest. I still remember Paul, and will never forget you. Yes, his laugh was memorable. His heart was large and I know he was dedicated to what ever he felt strongly about. Thank You Mr. Paul Neubauer, I am proud to have known you! I was in Paul's platoon and he was one of my best friends, he was also a mentor to me when I was a boot PFC. We both joked about how we would join the French Foreign Legion and then the Isreali commandos after Iraq because "soldiering was our life". He called me "Pierre" LeMar becasue of my French last name and cracked me up when he would talk in his "French accent" while smoking a cigarette. I was with Paul on the mission he was killed in action. I remember before we rolled out he was playing the country song in his barracks room, "All gave some, some gave all." I looked at Paul and he looked at me as if he knew what was going to happen. I'm haunted by that night to this day. I miss you terribly Paul, you're my friend and brother. It was my 4th and his 3rd but our 2nd deployment to the Middle East together. We joked in the chow hall one day that we would make it home and die of serious old age because we were both to damn bad and ugly to die here, because only the good die youg. I could only say now that he died young and I'm the old, the bad and the ugly.To live with the memory of loosing my friend for as long as I do live...I miss him, but most of all I miss his laughter which could be heard for miles.
