I learned so much from you. The world became a darker place when we lost your light. That's about it. I wish I had some sentimental memory of time with him, but the honest truth is that I don't. The truth about my relationship with Jose is that it was a professional one. He was one of my soldiers. But he was also more. I counted Jose as that one guy in my squad I didn't need to worry about. He was a badass. He was that guy that everyone knew had it together. He was that guy that everyone knew they could look at during a firefight and would be calm and collected. I wasn't Jose's friend. We didn't have long talks about what we would do when we got home. But if I told him to hold a corner, he would respond with "Roger" and I knew that sector was covered, without a doubt. He epitomized what I meant to be an infantryman. He was kind, he was smart, he was a professional, and he was ready to deal violence at the drop of a hat. You were an outstanding Soldier and leader and this Army and World are better because you were here. I recently wrote a paper for CGSC about leaders who have inspired me and made me a better leader and person. I didn't mention Patton or MacArthur, I mentioned you. I will always remember your commitment to leading by example, your passion for Soldiers, and your willingness to always be there for your brothers in arms. I am truly a better person for knowing you. Thank you, I'll see you on the high ground. -Cannibal 21 (MAJ Johnathan Martin) Sun, 18 Jan 2015 10:02:23 -0800 Bryan S. The best soldier I ever had or new. I remember our talks, and how you always strived to be the best you could be. All of your peers looked up to you, and I am certain in their memorys still do. I am pissed that there was nothing I could do to save you, and would willingly trade places with you if I could. This memorial day I remember you as I always have; as strong and dedicated young man aspiring for greatness! I will always remember you my little brother!
