I picked him up from the airfield in Balad along with other soldiers. Of all the soldiers, he stood out to me. We served together in 3-67AR 4ID. Different companies though. We would go on supply runs. God it's been so long. I remember not long before I left country, he saying he was going to write the group No Doubt to see if they would send music out to us. Never found out if he did. But I remember getting word of his passing. I was in California. I was so lost for words. Everytime I hear a No Doubt song, I think of Steven. Gone but not forgotten. Miss you brother. He was a friend I considered a little brother. We served together in Iraq. He loved his family and served with all he had. I am honored to have known him. r.i.p. my brother Sun, 29 Jan 2017 01:01:25 -0800 Alejandra barkle on May 25, 2015 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/steven-acosta/#c180455 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/steven-acosta/#c180455 El era una linda persona llena de sentimietos hermosos y el mejot amigo que pude tener ... #alwaysinmyheart Mon, 25 May 2015 06:32:38 -0700 Jim Corriere on November 22, 2010 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/steven-acosta/#c41704 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/steven-acosta/#c41704 I live in Brawley. Sat, 29 May 2010 08:51:36 -0700 Despin on May 13, 2010 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/steven-acosta/#c28030 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/steven-acosta/#c28030 I went to High School w/ Steven. We hung out mostly our Junior yr. I remember the day of his death. I was home with my family. His neighbor had called me very saddened. She said, "You are not going to believe what happened." Steven had passed away. Upon receiving the message, one thousand memories that I spent with him in High School flashed in my mind in a matter of seconds. I replied, "I'll call you in a lil' bit." I cried my eyes out flooding the carpet in my room. I dragged myself to the living room where my family was watching t.v with liquid of tears that followed me. My family panicked as they witnessed me gasping for air and in complete distraught. I noted to them that I had lost a High School friend in Iraq. They comforted me. He loved the military attitude. Steven used to tell me that he had bombs that his brother had brought from his service. I believed him. He possessed a zeal for bombs and guns; it was his thing. He was following his role model's footsteps - his older brothers that served. He's been missed. He was my roommate while we waited to go off. Then we shipped out to Basic and were in the same platoon for Reception Battalion. Then we were on the same platoon for Basic Training. For graduation from basic I met his mother and his brother the marine. Stephen was a really tough guy but very nice too. He always helped others who were having a hard time. I did not realize we had been in the same part of Iraq until one day while going through FOB Warhorse in Baquba I accidently went through a casualty list. The list was in alphabetical order. Being “Acosta” he was at the top on the first page. He had told me he wanted to become a teacher and would be able to do it after the Army. Stephen was never meek about going to war. But in Baquba you didn’t know who to fight until you were the one in the kill zone. can someone tell me what happened?
