My last memory was him smoking me for something I messed up on. I will never forget the day he passed. When our team arrived at the airfield after a much longer mission than usual the news was laid on us by SSG Jarred Staidle. "As most of you know men.... Gathercole didn't make it. Let us have a moment of silence to remember him." After that brief moment, we began our walk from the airfield back to the JOC for debrief. That was the longest darkest walk I've ever done. It seemed like an eternity, pitch black, you could feel the weight of pain in every step, that deep knot in your stomach on the verge of nausea. You knew the men walking had sorrow and guilt, though no one will ever admit it, the tears were silent but could be heard. You are still remembered.
