I did not have the privilege of working along side you on a daily basis but you were still my mentor. You were the finest example of a soldier, father, husband, and Christian I ever came into contact with. My sympathy and prayers always go out to your wonderful family. I will never forget you and long for the day I will see you again brother. Wed, 11 Oct 2017 05:08:25 -0700 CAPT Alan W. He was a fellow Naval Officer and my Executive Officer at NMCB 17, but more importantly he was a friend and fellow follower of Christ. You are missed brother, we will catch up some day. He was truly a good man. Reading through these tributes on Veterans Day 2014, makes me proud to know I served with someone special. Happy Veterans Day Duane. We miss you. We hit it off immediately. I miss all the laughs we had at drill. He had quite a sense of humor. He called me a month before he was killed/as I was getting mobilized we were going to try to meet up over there. The mold was broken when he was killed. My deep sympathy to his wife and family. We had some intense times on a couple of those missions. I will always remember talking to him the morning after we got through an ambush in Fallujah as he was outside studying the damage to our vehicle we had been in. God bless his family. Lets never forget those who didnt come home. I remind and explain to my children the importance of Memorial Day and ask that you do to your families also. He opened a desk drawer and pulled out a standard issue shoeshine kit. He handed me the kit and said something like "You're gonna need this becuse one minute you'll be in the field and the next you'll be called to the front office." Everytime I shine my shoes I use that kit and think of him. Godspeed my friend. This is a testament to the impact Duane Wolfe made upon my life and I'm sure there are countless others who would say the same. My job in Afghanistan requires me to be around US military personnel each day. Periodically I see glimpses of Duane in their faces. I've seen his deliberate gate walking away from me or noticed men pressing forward with their heads down in thought; the way Duane used to walk when he was on his way to an important event. What's surprising is that I wasn't even thinking of the guy. It feels like I'm being tapped on the shoulder and being told, "Be careful... pay attention." Having served together in the Navy he said those words to me quite often, and whenever I heard them, I could feel their sincerity. There was a goodness about Duane that was unique, indeed. Profound, in fact. One of God's most profound acts of kindness is that he allows our hearts to heal -- even after suffering devastating losses. I experienced this after the loss of my son and I'm going through it again with my brother-in- arms, mentor, and friend; Duane. I'm thankful for the blessings we still recieve from our Lord and his servant. Iwas shocked upon hearing of his death.I considered him a quality leader and a Seabee that personified the motto "Can Do". My heart goes out to his family, fellow Seabees and friends. The world is a better place for all he did, but sorrowful for his loss. All I can say is what a great boss he was and a respected man by all who worked with him. I never really got over that day and not sure I will. He believed in those around him and it was a constant reminder to each of us what it meant to be a "valued player." He found time to greet everyone regardless of position/status. His position required we regard him highly; we did, not because we had to, but because we wanted to. There are "leaders" everywhere. There are very few that are the true inspirational leaders. Those are the individuals you want to stand next to during the battles of war and life. We will miss you Mr. Wolfe; you meant a great deal to all of us! Tue, 02 Mar 2010 12:09:03 -0800
