I don't know what made me think of him tonight but I remember the night on the base he sat down with the regular poker guys and wanted to play a few hands. He found out quickly we played very serious and stern poker. One of the first big hands I had a monster hand and keept betting big. He called every bet (including my all in) and lost. I didn't realize he wanted to play a friendly house game... (I was the most Jr augmentee attached to their team and felt very weird about it) He left quickly and i thought he was a little mad. Later that night i sheepishly went to his hooch to give him a picture (one of many I had taken and developed throughout some of our times on missions, in an attempt to make amends. He loved the picture, gave me a bro hug and promised he wasn't mad about anything. He hung the picture I took of his team/truck on his mirror. I was just curious where that pic might be now and to let anyone who's interested know;I have a few others. I thank him and his family for his dedication to our county. Thank you for keeping America free and protecting our beliefs. It's because heroes like you my very young daughter will be able to live freely in this wonderful country. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! RIP Fri, 31 Dec 2010 02:08:56 -0800 Ronnie Durbiano on January 2, 2010 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/joshua-r-townsend/#c20367 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/joshua-r-townsend/#c20367 It is approaching the one year mark of losing one of my best friends as well as a huge mentor. To this day I have a hard time actually believing that Josh is not here, and not on a mission. He was a protector of not only the United States, but also a guardian to me since we first met.I have a few tattoo's in Josh's memory and even his tags that he wore, it's a painful yet constant reminder of a friend I will never forget and a friend I will always love. My only regret is that my son (Nicholas) never got to meet the the greatest person I have ever met. But he will know Josh through the stories I will tell about a true hero. I miss you Towny! He was so kind and his goofy sense of humor could always bring a smile to my face. Josh was a huge part of some of the happiest times of my life. I could always count on Josh for straight-forward advice and he was always there for me when I needed him. I am so proud of him and the decisions he made in his life. Josh is a true hero and I will always look up to him. He will always hold a very special place in my heart. I first met Josh down range in Afghanistan and the first impression of him was a lasting one. He was a man who was extremely proficient at his work and one who was admired by both American and Afghan forces. I will miss you brother… Fri, 23 Jan 2009 06:52:12 -0800 Lt Colonel Dave Wells on January 20, 2009 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/joshua-r-townsend/#c10346 https://projects.latimes.com/wardead/name/joshua-r-townsend/#c10346 Dr Amos Townsend (Colonel, USAF ret'd) has asked me for address and phone # for Joshua's next of kin. His confidence an leadership ability was evident at an early age. He was a "hard charger", knowing what he wanted and knowing he would not be denied. He was also able to make connections that settled in ones heart. I have one of those places in my heart and I will always remember Josh. Tue, 20 Jan 2009 10:45:31 -0800
