Hubbard joined the Army after his brother, Jared, and childhood friend Jeremiah Baro were killed by a roadside bomb in November 2004. Hubbard and 13 other soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash that his oldest brother, Jason, an Army sergeant, witnessed.

Nathan was one of the most amazing people I have ever met . I remember he started growing dreads . I asked him why he was doing it . He said " I may be white , but I'm jaimacan at heart " .. He awas one of the funniest guys I ever met , always had a smile , and everyone loved him . We weren't best friends , but we did hang out alot during breaks at school and would always play fight when we saw each other outside of school . He was taken too soon , and his brother . He was one of a kind and inspired me to join the army . Rest in peace brother . Still cherish the memories of you and both of us pushing each other into bushes at school . Now its in dumb dumber two . We invented that . Anyway , reat in peace and I know your in a better place . Miss you
