Albert Dekker was a well-known character actor through the 1940s and 1950s, particularly in film westerns. He was also a California assemblyman in the 1940s.
In Sacramento, Dekker was remembered as a colorful legislator and supporter of liberal causes. He left after one term, saying the trips to Sacramento interfered with his movie career and that he could not support his family on a legislator's salary.
In 1968, Dekker's body was found hanging from a shower rod in the bathroom of his Hollywood apartment. Hollywood detectives listed the death as a possible suicide.
Dekker's body was bound in complicated knots, according to Det. Daniel K. Stewart, and the hands were cuffed. The bathroom door was secured by an inside chain lock, they added.
Police said the apartment contained a number of pieces of women's clothes, as well as whips and chains. They did not speculate how long the actor had been dead, but said his front door was covered with notes, apparently left by callers whose rings were unanswered.
In 1957, Dekker's son Jan, 16, was found shot to death in the Dekker home in Hastings on Hudson, N.Y. The death was listed as accidentally self-inflicted.
