Anjelica Huston
Anjelica Huston is a member of movie royalty. Her father is the Oscar-winning writer/director and sometimes actor John Huston, and her grandfather was Oscar-winning actor Walter Huston. All three have a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Raised in Ireland and London by her mother, ballet dancer Enrica Soma, Huston made a horrendous film debut in her father’s 1969 flop, “A Walk With Love and Death.” After her mother died, she moved to New York where she became a model and eventually Jack Nicholson’s longtime gal pal. She slowly worked her way back into the film business, getting a small role in Elia Kazan’s 1976 film, “The Last Tycoon,” and as a lion tamer opposite Nicholson in the 1981 remake of “The Postman Always Rings Twice."
She reunited with her father in the dark, 1985 comedy “Prizzi’s Honor,” with Nicholson and Kathleen Turner. Huston earned a supporting actor Oscar as a vengeful mobster daughter. Ironically, some four decades earlier, her father had directed her grandfather to a supporting actor Oscar in 1948’s “The Treasure of Sierra Madre.”
Huston also worked with her father, who died in 1987, in his last film, “The Dead,” released later that year. She earned another supporting actress nomination as an acerbic Holocaust survivor in Paul Mazursky’s 1989 drama, “Enemies: A Love Story” and a best actress Oscar nod as a con woman in 1990’s “The Grifters.”
She followed in her father’s footsteps as a director with the controversial 1996 TV movie, “Bastard Out of Carolina.” Although it was originally produced for TNT, the heady drama dealt with child abuse and rape and was considered too intense for commercially-supported TV. It found a home on Showtime, where it received excellent reviews. Huston made her feature film directorial debut in 1999 with the Irish melodrama “Agnes Browne.”
Over the last decade, she’s moved between features and TV, earning a Golden Globe for supporting actress for the 2004 HBO drama “Iron Jawed Angels.” She brought her comedic skill to Wes Anderson’s 2001 “The Royal Tenenbaums,” and 2004’s “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.” In 2010, she played the curator of the Guggenheim in the comedy “When in Rome.”
