Antonio Banderas got his start in the Spanish film industry appearing in a series of films for director Pedro Almodovar in the late 1980s. His starring role in Almodovar’s “Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down” (1989), as a mentally unbalanced man who ties up a porn star in an attempt to force her to love him, was his breakthrough role and helped him cross over to mainstream Hollywood films.

His supporting roles in several high-profile films, including the Oscar-winning “Philadelphia” and the box office hit “Interview With the Vampire” led to starring roles in action films “Desperado” and “The Mask of Zorro.”

He costarred with Madonna in the film version of “Evita” and has sung songs on the soundtracks of several of his films. He has also appeared on stage in the Broadway revival of the musical “Nine,” which earned him a Tony nomination.

In recent years he has become famous to family audiences for his roles in the “Spy Kids” trilogy and as the voice of Puss in Boots in the “Shrek” films.

He met actress Melanie Griffith on the set of the comedy “Two Much” and married her in 1996. He made his directorial debut with the 1999 film “Crazy in Alabama” starring Griffith.
