Celine Dion
The youngest of 14 children, Celine Dion and her commanding voice emerged from the Canadian music scene to become a force to be reckoned with around the globe. She’s produced dozens of hits singles, sold millions of records and even moonlights as an eye-wear designer and a perfumista.
At age 12, Dion recorded a demo tape of a song and sent it to manager and producer (and future husband) Rene Angelil. He signed Dion immediately and the balladeer’s foray into musical stardom was established. By the age of 18, Dion had recorded nine French albums and won numerous Felix and Juno awards (the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy). After a taste of international fame, Dion headed to the States and released her first English language album, “Unison,” in 1990.
Her breakthrough came in 1992, when she recorded the theme — a duet with Peabo Bryson — for Disney’s animated feature “Beauty and the Beast.” The song, which won a Grammy and an Academy Award, was featured on her successful self-titled sophomore album, which allowed Dion to headline her first tour in the U.S.
From there, romantic power ballad after romantic power ballad followed, including “When I Fall in Love.” “The Power of Love,” “Because You Loved Me” and the smash hit from the “Titanic” soundtrack, “My Heart Will Go On.” Along the way, the pop diva has sold more than 200 million records worldwide.
In 1994, Dion merged her personal and professional life when she married Angelil, 26 years her senior, in an elaborate ceremony at Montreal's Notre Dame Basilica. And in 2000, Dion caused a stir when she announced she was taking time off from her career to focus on her family. After years of trying to conceive, she and Angelil decided to use in-vitro fertilization. By 2001, the couple welcomed their first child, Rene-Charles.
Afrer a two-year hiatus, Dion returned 2002 with the chart-topping album, “A New Day Has Come.” A year later, she began an engagement at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas that lasted nearly five years. She released another album and even returned to creating French-language albums.
In 2003, Dion signed a deal with Coty to release Celine Dion Parfums, which has generated more than $850 million in retail sales since its creation.
She most recently made headlines with the announcement that she is expecting twins.
