Charlize Theron
Former fashion model Charlize Theron acted steadily in major studio features (including “The Devil’s Advocate,” “Sweet November, “The Italian Job”), working with such esteemed directors as Woody Allen (“The Curse of the Jade Scorpion”), Lasse Hallstrom (“The Cider House Rules”) and Robert Redford (“The Legend of Bagger Vance”) before surprising Hollywood and audiences alike with her bold, vanity-free performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s “Monster.”
The independent film indelibly established Theron as a “serious” actress, winning her that year’s Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.
She followed up with acclaimed performances in the HBO telefilm “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers” and the gritty workplace drama “North Country,” which earned her Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG award nominations.
Though Theron flopped in the sci-fi action film “Aeon Flux,” she later did compelling work in the somber dramas “In the Valley of Elah,” “Sleepwalking,” “The Burning Plain” and “The Road.” She also appeared opposite Will Smith in the superhero adventure “Hancock.”
The actress, who has said she will not wed until same-sex marriage is fully recognized, dated actor Stuart Townsend from 2001 to 2010.
