The four simple words “Show me the money!,” as now-famously uttered by his character Ron Tidwell in 1996’s “Jerry Maguire,” may have been single-handedly responsible for Cuba Gooding Jr.’s supporting actor Oscar win and indelible career boost.
Though he has since acted non-stop in a broad range of film comedies (“Snow Dogs,” “Norbit”) and dramas (“Men of Honor,” “American Gangster”), Gooding has yet to latch onto another feature part quite as memorable — or memorably performed — as either egocentric football player Tidwell or another earlier, attention-getting role: South-Central L.A. teen Tre Styles in “Boyz n the Hood.”
Son of the lead singer of the 1970s soul group the Main Ingredient (“Everybody Plays the Fool”), Gooding earned a Screen Actors Guild award nomination for playing famed neurosurgeon Ben Carson in the 2009 telefilm “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story.”
The actor has been married to Sara Kapfer since 1994. They have two sons, Spencer and Mason.
