Ilka Chase was an actress and author who found success on Broadway and in Hollywood before leaving acting behind to write full time.
Chase was born in New York on April 8, 1900. By the time she was a young teenager, her mother, Edna Woolman Chase, had worked her way from the mailroom at Vogue to become the magazine's editor-in-chief.
She made her Broadway debut at age 24 and went on to star in such stage hits as "The Women" and "Barefoot in the Park."
Chase also appeared in a number of motion pictures, including "Now, Voyager" (1942), "The Animal Kingdom" (1932) and "Ocean's Eleven" (1960).
Her literary career included 18 published works, and she was reportedly working on a 19th at the time of her death. Her books covered such genres as fiction and travel and included a memoir. She also coauthored her mother's autobiography.
After the retirement of her third husband, Dr. Norton Brown, the couple moved to Cuernavaca, Mexico, although they kept a Long Island, N.Y., residence. Chase died of an internal hemorrhage in Mexico City on Feb. 15, 1978.
